WSFF celebrates Sportswomen of the Year

WSFF are delighted to congratulate the winners of The Sunday Times Sportswomen of the Year Awards 2010. Maggie Alphonsi, the iconic England women’s rugby player, has been awarded Sportswoman of the Year 2010, while Fran Halsall, European Swimming Champion, collected WSFF Young Sportswoman of the Year.

WSFF, the official charity partner of the awards, now in their 23rd year, hosted the awards alongside CCPR in order to celebrate female sporting success from leading sportswomen through to rising stars. The winners were presented with their awards at a reception at the British Olympic Association HQ in London on November 22.

Maggie’s performance at the recent Women’s Rugby World Cup, sealed her victory on the award night. She faced tough competition from other leading figures in high performance sport including Olympic Bob Skeleton Champion Amy Williams, World Hepathlon Champion Jessica Ennis and Olympic gymnast, Beth Tweddle.

In the other categories the winners were Katherine Grainger and Anna Watkins (rowing), who took Team of the Year, while Danielle Brown (archery) claimed Disabled Sportswoman of the Year.

WSFF’s Chief Executive, Sue Tibballs said: “It has been a tremendous year for British Olympic and Paralympic athletes, and we have some of the strongest talent in the world. Never has there been a better time to reflect the success of female athletes in a whole variety of sport disciplines and in doing so, provide inspirational role models for females of all ages. WSFF is committed to promoting the massive contribution made by women to British sporting success and highlighting the huge potential of women’s sport."

A panel of judges, chaired by Eleanor Oldroyd, BBC 5 Live sports broadcaster, decided the winners in three categories, while the overall award was decided through a public vote.
