NEW for 2011, this factsheet highlights the key findings for women's sports participation from the 2009-10 Active People Survey.

• 2.76 million women (12.8%) take part in regular sport every week, this is a non-significant increase since 2008-09

• Swimming, gym and athletics are the most participanted in sports by women

• Women who have a household (hh) income of over £52,000 are more than three times as likely to be active as women with a hh income less than £15,600

Taekwondo

Taekwondo participation overview

Around 10,800 women take part in taekwondo at least once a week, making it the 27th most popular participation sport for women.

Male participation is not much higher than women’s – around 14,400 men take part weekly.

There has been no significant change in female participation in taekwondo participation in the last year.

Looking back over the past three years female participation has fluctuated, so it is hard to establish a clear trend.

Lacrosse

Lacrosse participation overview

Around 8,600 women play lacrosse at least once a week, making it the 28th most popular participation sport for women.

97% of all female lacrosse players are aged between 16 and 34.

There has been no significant change in women’s monthly participation in lacrosse since 2008-09.

Boxing

Boxing participation overview

19,400 women box at least once a week.

Participation has fluctuated over the past few years although figures are not significant enough to establish any trend.

Boxing remains a predominantly male sport, with approximately five times as many men as women taking part.

Basketball

Basketball participation overview

Basketball is currently the 17^th most popular sport for women, but the 4^th most popular team sport.

There has been a considerable decline in the proportion of women – around 30,200 women took part in basketball at least once a week in 2009-10, compared to 40,700 in 2008-09.
