The North East group has been going since 1984 and is proud to have some wonderfully energetic and committed members who've kept the network going, organised conferences and events and kept gender on the region's sports agenda. They were rewarded for all their hard work when they received funding for the first WSF Regional Development Manager in the country. In 2003 Ruth Lewis took up the post of Regional Development Manager and she's been working to consolidate and develop the volunteers' work. At the end of 2003, we had a very successful conference at the Stadium of Light, Sunderland, to launch the WSF research, 'A Sporting Chance for Women: career opportunities in sport in the NE of England' and the new post.
There are about 10 active members of the NE group. There's slightly higher membership from the north rather than south of the region, an imbalance that we want to correct in future by attracting more members from the Tees Valley area to make sure that the group is properly representative of the region. We meet quarterly and at present the group is focusing on identifying good practice in sport for women and girls in the region and securing funding to continue the RDM post. But we're always open to new ideas and new members!
